Course Overview

This course will open your eyes to the subject of Research & Methodology, its importance to research, data analysis, and publication. It will introduce you to scales of measurements, descriptive and inferential statistics, the normal distribution, z transformation, statistical tests, and parametric statistical tests.

Meet the Speaker

Prof. Samath Dharmarathne

He is the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and the Chair Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and a board-certified Specialist in Community Medicine in Sri Lanka. He brings over 30 years’ experience in teaching, research, disease prevention and medical administration in Sri Lanka, India, United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States of America. He has the highest Google scholar citation (209,275) in the country and has an H-index of 86 to date.

He has supervised more than 50 postgraduate students and many undergraduates. His teaching experience include statistics, research methodology, epidemiological research methods, heath economics, nutrition, injury prevention and health systems research. His expertise includes project performance monitoring and evaluation, statistical analysis, database management, project proposal preparation and theses evaluation. He has worked for the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank and at the Universities of Western Australia and Sydney in Australia and the University of Washington in the USA. As the Public Health Specialist at the World Bank, Sri Lanka, he provided technical assistance, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation of large-scale health projects funded by the World Bank. Prof. Dharmaratne is an Affiliate Associate Professor at the Department of Health Metrics Sciences at the University of Washington and is a Principal Collaborator in the Global Burden of Disease study. His other important international collaborations included being the First Secretary of the Road Traffic Injuries Research Network, the Secretary of the International Society of Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention and a Board Director of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. He was the Director of the Health Emergency and Disaster Management Training Centre of the University of Peradeniya and provided technical assistance to the national and regional directorates of the Ministry of Health in the COVID-19 prevention efforts of Sri Lanka.

As a past President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and the Kandy Society of Medicine, he collaborated and managed important issues facing the medical fraternity in Sri Lanka. He obtained University Grants Commission approval to the Kaatsu International University (KIU) with approval for four-degree programs and obtained approval for the Master of Public Health (MPH) program that is being offered at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Peradeniya.
